Dry Eye Conditions

WHAT IS DRY EYE?

Dry eye is a common and progressive condition where the tear glands do not produce enough tears, produce poor quality tears or tears evaporate too quickly. They are common in those aged over 50, but it’s possible for those younger to have these conditions.3

Dry eye causes discomfort, burning, grittiness and blurred vision. It makes it difficult to complete daily tasks, such as computer work and driving.3

Dry eye affects both genders but are prevalent in females due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, oral contraceptive use and menopause.

DIGITAL DEVICE USE

Prolonged use of digital device without regular blinking can cause greater tear evaporation.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS

Nasal decongestants, antidepressants and certain blood pressure medication can cause dry eye.

Dry eye is common after LASIK vision correction surgery.

Dry Eye Classification

The major classes of dry eye are aqueous tear-deficient dry eye (ADDE) & evaporative dry eye (EDE). Aqueous tear-deficient dry eye implies that dry eyes is due to a failure of lacrimal tear secretion. Evaporative dry eye is due to excessive water loss from the exposed ocular surface and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is the most common cause of evaporative dry eye.3, 4

Fun Facts!

tear drop

WHY DO WE NEED TEARS?

When we blink, tears lubricate, nourish and protect the front of the eye.

The natural tear film in our eyes work to keep them lubricated and free of foreign particles! This reduces the risk of infections and maintains a clear eye surface without blurring.

GET TO KNOW: THE 3 LAYERS OF TEARS!3

Lipid Layer:
It’s an oily outermost layer that keeps tears from evaporating too quickly.

Aqueous Layer:
It’s mostly made up of water, which provides moisture and flushes out eye irritants.

Mucin Layer:
It provides tear adhesion by spreading the watery layer across the entire surface of the eye.

DID YOU KNOW?

With Cationorm® eye drops, an electrostatic interaction is created among the positively charged cationic nano-emulsion with the eyes’ negatively charged ocular surface which helps to prolong the residence time of eye drops on the eye surface.2

You need to regularly instil normal eye drops because blinking causes an 80% loss of product! The relief is only temporary, unlike Cationorm® eye drops where there is longer residence on the eye.
